Sea Fever: A Classical Music Adventure

4th March 2017, 7.30PM

Towner Gallery, Eastbourne

The Experience
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife

 John Masefield, Sea Fever

Sea Fever
A Classical Music adventure
Starring the Arensky Chamber Orchestra
with music by Steffan Rees, Claude Debussy and Benjamin Britten

‘Deeply Moving’ The Independent ****

‘It made you feel as if you were at the centre of an Arctic gale with frost on your chin!’ The Guardian ****

Tickets are £10, including a cocktail and canapé inspired by the music.

Welcome. What you are about to experience is Classical Music, just not as you know it.

What does Classical Music mean to you?

Cramped
auditoriums and a silent troupe of musicians in bow ties?
Formal programmes and a dry (in every sense!) evening sitting in silence?

Not any more.

As you enter the Towner Gallery your first experience of Sea Fever will be the tang of the spray and smell of the ocean with themed food and drink inspired by the music.

Then there’ll be the pre-concert show: Shut your eyes and you’ll see the clouds racing across the sky or the grey mists rising off the water, as the Arensky Chamber Orchestra play music written specially for this seafaring escapade by composer Steffan Rees.

Next there’ll be the live programme note: From the stage, the members of the orchestra will lead you out beyond the breakers with stories about the music they are playing and the men that wrote them; tales from their own musical lives and yarns from across the Seven Seas.

Then, with the call of the waves ringing in your ears, it’s the main event.

The Arensky Chamber Orchestra, one of the country’s most electrifying ensembles, will play you two extraordinary masterpieces inspired by the sea: Claude Debussy’s La Mer and Benjamin Britten’s Sea Interludes.

Sit back and relax – not in a narrow row of stalls but at your own table and chairs, within touching distance of the musicians.

Lose yourself – not in a dull auditorium surrounded by empty walls but immersed in art, stories, music and mystery.

With your imagination on fire, you’ll hear every note.
Sat so close, you’ll almost feel the fingers dancing across the strings.
And with your mind and heart open, it’ll be like you’re there, playing it with them.
